An Update From MCUSY's President
Becky Bernard
Hello! Welcome to the first edition of The MCUSY Newsy in 2021! So much has happened over these past few months.
To start, CRUSY has had two regional conventions over the past few months. A Survivor themed Fall Boards & 8/9th Grade Kinnus was held in October, and in November, CRUSY hosted Fall Kinnus themed like The Amazing Race. In between, CRUSY teamed up with the other regions in Branch 2, Chicago Region USY (CHUSY) and Emtza Region USY, to host a joint PIXAR Cars Kadima Kinnus. Lastly, In December, International USY hosted its first ever Zoom convention for IC 2020. Thank you to all of the MCUSY-ites who represented MCUSY at these conventions!
In October, MCUSY hosted a game night in our Sukkahs to celebrate the Holiday of Sukkot. We played Among Us and several MCUSY alumni joined us on Zoom to play. Thank you to everyone who came!
Later that month, MCUSY hosted a movie night at Congregation Beth Shalom, where we watched Monsters Inc. Thank you to Rabbi Gamer and Congregation Beth Shalom for welcoming us into your space!
In November, we hosted another Among Us game night, and in December, we celebrated Hanukkah by baking cookies. Thanks to everyone who came to both events!
To start off the new year, MCUSY hosted a Wikipedia Scavenger Hunt where MCUSY-ites navigated through Wikipedia pages by clicking the internal links. Congratulations to Maya and Elan Rosenberg for being our two winners.

From the 8th Grade Reps (MCUSY's Newest Board Members)
Aryeh Gamer and Elan Rosenberg
USY has been a very important part of our Jewish lives, and we are so excited to be on MCUSY board! When discussing our favorite USY memories, we couldn’t pick just one; there was Kandima Kinus 2019, Fall Kinnus, and a bunch of crazy stories too. However, one thing that we immediately agreed on was that the most important part of USY for us are the connections we have made with Jewish teens from across CRUSY. Even in just a couple of short years in USY, we have been able to make lasting connections through our love for USY.
Although it’s not the same as having events in person, we have still been able to have conventions, and our usual events. In fact, being online has opened up new opportunities; we have been able to have joint events with other regions and chapters, which has made it easier to stay in touch with long-distance friends!
We are looking forward to returning to our normal events (hopefully soon), and seeing all of you there!

Chag Sameach: A Word on Tu BiShvat
Maya Rosenberg
Each year on the 15th day of Shevat, Tu B'Shevat is celebrated to wish the trees a Happy New Year. It comes around at this time of year because of how Israel's seasons happen: Sukkot is the rainy month in Israel, so four months later the soil is ready to produce fruit. Many people celebrate Tu B'Shevat by eating the fruit that Israel is known for: olives, dates, figs, pomegranates, grapes, and things made from wheat and barley.

Haddasah opens Israel’s first Pediatric Covid 19 ICU
Israel has opened the first pediatric ICU in the country for Coronavirus patients due to the alarming rate of young children being diagnosed with Covid 19 over the past several weeks. The children which have already been admitted to the ICU span from 2 years of age to only 10 days old. This comes right after health providers said that they would start offering the vaccine to 18 and 17 year olds.
Ultra-Orthodox mob injuries police officer
A police officer who was injured in an ultra Orthodox mob in Bnei Brak said that she “feared for her life.” She also said that she and her department were called horrible things, such as “nazi’s”. It almost got out of hand but fortunately, forces came to rescue them from the violent mob.
Gantz warns Netanyahu
Benny Gantz warned Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu that he would not allow him to interfere during the talks with U.S. President Joe Biden on crafting policy toward Iran. Gantz is confident that the U.S. will provide a “sympathetic ear” towards important issues like Iran.

Social Action During COVID
Maya Rosenberg
There is never a wrong time or age to help others. Around the New Year, a five-year-old found out that not everyone gets to have hot cocoa. Shocked by this news, his parents were able to help him donate hundreds of boxes of hot cocoa and marshmallows to people for the holidays because he wanted to make sure everyone could stay warm. Any act of kindness for the good of others will never go unnoticed, even if it doesn’t seem like something that could make an impact. No matter a person’s age or if they can’t donate a lot of one thing, any donation made will always make someone’s day.
While COVID has made it harder to safely give back to our communities, there are still many ways to help people out. As USYers, we take every opportunity we can to participate in Tikkun Olam and help others in the community.
